The Algarve has been a popular destination for holidaymakers for years. The region offers so much for families, couples and individual travellers – from traditional fishing villages to mountain getaways, private sandy coves to bustling, cosmopolitan towns.
In the western Algarve, Cape St. Vincent, the most south-westerly point of Portugal (and continental Europe), boasts rugged cliffs and impressive views over the Atlantic Ocean.

What to do on your Algarve holiday
Go inland from the coast and you find the Serra de Monchique, a range of mountains covered in pine, oak and eucalyptus forests. The area is famous for its thermal springs, the Caldas de Monchique, and is a popular base for outdoor activities such as hiking and biking excursions.
Faro, with its international airport, is the gateway to the Algarve. Visit its 9th century city walls, which protect the Moorish and Roman buildings and architecture of the old town. While away the time enjoying some of the local food and drink such as Frango da Guia (spicy chicken) or seafood like sardines or shrimps.
Travel further east and discover the pristine town of Tavira with its pretty plaza, small amphitheatre and Roman bridge. The Ria Formosa dominates the coastline of the eastern Algarve, with long strips of almost deserted beaches separating the river with the sea, offering a wealth of plants and wildlife to discover.
