    Info & tips for Morocco

    A country steeped in history

Many people start their holiday in Morocco with a round trip to the famous royal cities of Fès, Meknès, Rabat and Marrakech, which boast magnificent old palaces, mosques and madrasas (Koran schools) and have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Fès, the oldest of them all, was founded in 789 by Idris I, who had found vital water sources in the barren land. His mausoleum is located in nearby Moulay Idris, a city that is also often visited while on holiday in Morocco, as the impressive remains of the Roman city of Volubilis lie just outside the city. From here, the journey continues to Meknès at the foot of the Middle Atlas, which spent a brief period as a royal city from 1672 to 1727 and captivates visitors with its magnificent palaces. Today's Moroccan capital Rabat can also call itself a royal city, as the youngest Alawi dynasty declared it its seat in 1912. Tourists mainly visit the medieval medina and the mighty Kasbah right by the sea.

Why is Marrakech always worth a visit?

The fourth royal city of Marrakech is probably the most popular holiday destination in Morocco. Like no other name, Marrakech promises the magic of the Orient with its lively souks and the jugglers' square, Djemaa el Fna, brimming with life by day and by night. Beautiful grounds such as the medieval Menara Gardens and the Jardin Majorelle delight visitors, as do historic buildings such as the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque and the Kasbah of about the same age. Marrakech is also the starting point for hikes in the High Atlas, whose snow-capped peaks appear close enough to touch. On jeep tours or long hikes, holidaymakers discover the traditional way of life of the Berbers and see their unique mud-built residential castles, known as the Tighremt. Certainly don't pass up a trip to this fascinating region when holidaying in Morocco! The Moroccan Atlantic coast

The famous seaside resort of Agadir with ROBINSON AGADIR is one of the most visited holiday destinations in Morocco: sun worshippers and windsurfers alike get their money's worth on the sandy beach that stretches for miles. Places like Dakhla have become a paradise for kitesurfers and wakeboarders, while the old pirate's haven of Essaouira is now popular with artists who offer their works in studios and galleries.
