5 places you should definitely see in Tunisia

Tunisia has it all: dream beaches, lively and exciting cities and impressive historical sites. So there is a lot to experience and a lot to see. We’ll show you the highlights of this dream destination.

Immerse yourself in antiquity in Carthage

The once magnificent city of the Phoenicians was a powerful centre for trade on the Mediterranean in ancient times. Numerous buildings, walls and significant evidence of the former culture remain to this day. You can stroll through the thermal baths of Antoninus Pius or visit the old amphitheatre. It is not for nothing that Carthage is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You should definitely visit the ancient site during your holiday in Tunisia.

Vibrant capital city with a special flair: Tunis

When you stroll through the streets of Tunis, you will quickly feel the special atmosphere. It is a hive of activity and full of life. But, at the same time, the capital exudes a relaxed Mediterranean laid-back attitude. A highlight of Tunis is the Medina, the old town. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you should definitely visit the souks for which Tunis is famous.

These are the large markets that stretch across countless small alleyways and arcades. Here you can immerse yourself in the magic of the oriental market. The air is filled with the wild babble of merchants' voices, the scent of spices and the many different specialities you can eat there. Your eyes will hardly be able to get enough of the bright colours of the carpets, shops and clothes! Afterwards, a visit to the Ez-Zitouna Mosque offers a contrasting experience with plenty of peace and quiet.

    Experience Caribbean vibes on Djerba

There is probably no other coast in North Africa where the Mediterranean is as dreamlike as on Djerba. Crystal clear, azure blue water meets the finest beaches lined with palm trees. Some compare the dream beaches with the beaches of the Caribbean. Of course, this is the perfect place to take a dip, but there are also ideal conditions for snorkelling, diving, surfing, sailing and swimming.

Experience desert magic in the Sahara

Tunisia's Sahara covers an incredible 40,000 square kilometres. The legendary desert has always exerted a great fascination over holidaymakers. One of the highlights of a holiday in Tunisia is therefore a tour into the desert. Top destinations here are the oases of Ksar Ghilane or Douz. But even a short tour into the vastness of the sandy landscape allows you to feel the special magic of the Sahara. If you want to experience something out of the ordinary, book a tour to Chott el Djerid, the largest salt lake in the Sahara.

Combine history and beach life in Sousse

Alongside Hammamet, Sousse is one of the most popular destinations for beach holidaymakers in Tunisia, with the exception of the dream island of Djerba, of course. But what makes Sousse stand out is the perfect combination of places steeped in history and beach life, such as Las Vegas Beach. Similar to Carthage, there is also an ancient amphitheatre here at El Djem. You can also find out more about the history of Sousse at the Archaeological Museum.

The 3 best activities on holiday in Tunisia

Of course, the sea is a highlight of your trip to Tunisia. Here you can go swimming, snorkelling or surfing. But there are even more opportunities to get active in the country.

Go on a safari through the Sahara

Experience the breathtaking beauty of the Sahara on a desert safari. Sleep under the stars in a Berber tent, experience the sunrise in the sea of sand, enjoy the tranquillity of the desert and take a camel ride through the dunes.

Bargain and haggle in the medinas of Tunis or Kairouan

The markets and shops in the old towns of Tunis or Kairouan are overwhelming and cannot be compared with the markets here. Amongst the scent of countless spices, fresh street food and the noise of the traders, you will find handmade products, electronics and clothing. Trying your hand at haggling during your holiday in Tunisia is a must.

    Immerse yourself in history

Whether it's Carthage, the Medina of Tunis or Sidi Bou Said, you should definitely get to know part of the country's history during your holiday in Tunisia. The best place to do this is at some of the most famous cultural sites in North Africa.

The most beautiful beaches in Tunisia

With more than 1,140 kilometres of coastline, Tunisia has a lot to offer beach holidaymakers. Dream beaches can be found all along the Mediterranean coast and on Djerba.

    • Plage de Sidi Mahrez on Djerba:

For many holidaymakers and locals alike, the most beautiful beach in the country is located in the north-east of Djerba. Not only is its length of more than ten kilometres impressive, but above all the azure, crystal-clear water. The sea is also shallow here, making it perfect for swimming with your children. At the same time, the conditions for surfing are excellent. The clear visibility in the water makes snorkelling or diving a real pleasure.

    • Plages de Hammamet:

Hammamet is home to one of the most popular beaches for Tunisians and holidaymakers. In fact, there are several beaches that stretch along the coast for 14 kilometres. Here you will find perfect bathing conditions and a dreamlike atmosphere. A special feature is the proximity of the beach to the city, so you can be in the centre of the hustle and bustle in just a few minutes or escape in no time at all.

    • Plage de Chott Meriem near Sousse:

If you're looking for a quiet beach life and want to have a little time to yourself while sunbathing, this beach is ideal. Despite its proximity to Tunisia's third largest city, the atmosphere here is relaxed. The sea is clear and blue, and you can hire a parasol and sun lounger on the fine sandy beach and simply enjoy yourself.

    • Séguia Plage on Djerba

This dream beach is located in the south-east of Djerba. With a length of five kilometres, it is not one of the larger ones. But it is one of the country's dream beaches, because here you can experience the finest white sand alongside azure blue water. There are palm trees on the beach itself, creating a Caribbean atmosphere. Swimming, sunbathing, surfing, sailing, everything is possible here.

Tunisian cuisine – a mix of flavours that will delight you

Tunisian cuisine is a veritable melting pot of Mediterranean, North African and Oriental flavours. Their diversity reflects Tunisia's eventful history. Fresh seafood, aromatic spices such as cumin and coriander and savoury couscous dishes are typical. Specialities such as tagine, a savoury casserole, and makroudh, sweet date cakes, are a must for every visitor. Harissa, a hot chilli paste, also adds a special touch of spice to many dishes. Tunisian cuisine is not only delicious, but also invites you on a culinary journey through North Africa.

The best time to travel to Tunisia for a holiday

While on holiday in Tunisia, you can be active, laze on the beach or visit sights. The high season between June and September is the best time to travel if you want to enjoy a perfect beach and bathing holiday. Temperatures are usually above 30°C. The sea is pleasantly warm at 25 to 27°C, but still refreshing due to the higher outside temperatures.

In fact, the low season in May and October is also perfect if you want to do water sports or sunbathe in moderate temperatures of 25°C and water temperatures of 21 to 24°C.

April and November are recommended for a city trip. Then the weather is mild at around 20°C. The months from December to March are recommended for desert tours. At 15 to 20°C in Tunisia, it is still warmer than where you live. Ideal conditions for desert tours, hikes in the Atlas Mountains or tours to the oases.

Frequently asked questions about holidays in Tunisia

What currency is used to pay in Tunisia?

In Tunisia, you pay in Tunisian dinar (TND). 1 TND is 1,000 millimes. You can exchange cash in euros at any major bank. Euros are generally not accepted at the market or in shops.
We recommend that you withdraw money from ATMs in small notes. This makes it much easier to pay at the souk or in restaurants and many sellers have little or no change.
You can pay by credit card in most shops in Tunis or larger tourist centres as well as in hotels.

What vaccinations do I need for Tunisia?

You do not need a special vaccinations for Tunisia. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you are vaccinated against hepatitis A and have valid standard immunisations (whooping cough, polio, tetanus and diphtheria). If you are in the country for a longer period of time, experts also recommend a vaccination against rabies as well as a vaccination against hepatitis B.

Can I travel to Tunisia with my identity card?

You can enter Tunisia with your passport or temporary passport. A visa is only required for long-term stays of four months or more. Make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months before you enter the country.

How much does an all-inclusive holiday in Tunisia cost?

If you would like to know how much an all-inclusive holiday in Tunisia costs, take a look at the offers for our Tunisian resort on our website.

Is Tunisia safe as a holiday destination?

Tunisia is considered a relatively safe destination in the hotel complexes and tourist centres. However, make sure that you don't spend too long in large crowds, especially in cities and busy areas.

How should you dress as a tourist in Tunisia?

As a tourist, you should dress appropriately, especially when visiting religious places such as mosques or cultural sites. This means that as a woman you do not wear low-cut necklines or swimwear in the mosque and cover your hair. In general, Tunisia is more western orientated, especially in Tunis, in the tourist areas and in the larger cities. You can dress here as you would at home. You should only refrain from wearing swimwear on the street out of respect for the country's culture.

    Is Tunisia dangerous?

In Tunisia, you should avoid travelling to the border areas and the outskirts of the Sahara if you are not a local. We recommend that you always travel with local guides.
As in other tourist regions, you should take care of your valuables in crowded places in Tunisia, e.g. in the souk. It's best to leave your valuables in the hotel safe and only take the essentials with you.
