Experience nature and history: What you should have seen in Cape Verde
Cape Verde's island motto is \"no stress\". And it is precisely this relaxed atmosphere that will accompany you during your holiday in Cape Verde. With 350 days of sunshine a year, the numerous dream beaches with crystal-clear water and white sand are the perfect place to unwind from everyday life. But even though the beaches of the Cape Verde islands are among the country's greatest highlights, it has much more to offer.
Salt pans in Pedra de Lume
You should definitely visit the salt pans in Pedra de Lume. They are located in a former salt mine and you can bathe in the salt pans.
Cidade Velha
If you want to trace Cape Verdean history, a visit to Cidade Velha on the island of Santiago is a must. The old town centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Viveiro Zoo
To immerse yourself in the fauna and flora of Cape Verde, take a trip to Viveiro Zoo. It is also a botanical garden and shows you the colourful landscape of flowers and leaves of the Cape Verde islands between monkeys and other native animals in a compact area.
A varied Cape Verde holiday: Discover the different islands of the country
Like other destinations, Cape Verde consists of several islands. As with a Maldives holiday, you will also have the opportunity to go island hopping in Cape Verde. And it’s something you should definitely do.
The island of Sal with the most beautiful beaches in Cape Verde
On Sal, for example, you will find the most beautiful beaches in Cape Verde. The conditions here are also ideal for surfers and kiters.
Boa Vista island: a natural paradise and mecca for watersports enthusiasts
Boa Vista is known above all for its varied natural landscape with vast dunes. A highlight are the sea turtles that use the beaches of Boa Vista to lay their eggs.
The green island: São Antão
São Antão is almost alpine. It is the most mountainous island in Cape Verde and ideal for hiking holidaymakers who want to enjoy unspoilt nature with magnificent vegetation. A visit to Santiago, the largest island in Cape Verde, should not be missed. It gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the country's rich culture.
Surfing, hiking, relaxing - this is what you can do during your holiday in Cape Verde
With almost 1,000 kilometres of coastline, a Cape Verde holiday is perfect for anyone who loves the sea and all the activities associated with it. But the islands of Cape Verde really do offer something for everyone, from active holidays to relaxed wellness holidays.
Snorkelling, surfing and sunbathing on Sal
Wide sandy beaches, turquoise blue sea and sunshine galore. What more do you need for an unforgettable beach holiday? The conditions on Sal are ideal for this. Whether surfing, snorkelling, bathing or swimming, you'll never be bored on or near the water.
Surfing on São Vicente
Thanks to a constant breeze, São Vicente is ideal for holidaymakers who enjoy windsurfing or kitesurfing. The conditions at Baia das Gatas and Praia do Norte, in particular, are perfect. To round off the evening, there are numerous restaurants in the port of Mindelo and in the city centre serving fresh fish and local specialities.
Hiking tours on São Nicolau and São Antão
If you need some exercise during your holiday in Cape Verde, a hiking tour on São Nicolau and São Antão is the right choice for you. São Nicolau, in particular, will inspire you with its combination of rugged rock formations, beautiful flowers and lush greenery. The barren rock formations below the Topa da Coroa, the highest mountain on São Antão at almost 2,000 metres, are also impressive. However, it is not the highest mountain in Cape Verde. At 2,829 metres, this is the Pico do Fogo.
History tour on Santiago
The old town centre, Cidade de Ribeira Grande de Santiago, was once the capital of the whole of the Cape Verde islands. Today it is Praia. But Santiago has lost none of its historic charm. The old town centre, in particular, with its impressive Portuguese colonial style, is well worth a visit. The small alleyways and painstakingly restored little houses have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2009. A trip to Santiago should therefore definitely be on your itinerary for your holiday in Cape Verde.
The most beautiful beaches for a Cape Verde holiday
Santa Monica Beach (Boa Vista)
Praia Santa Monica offers you more than 20 kilometres of the finest sandy beach, azure blue sea and plenty of sunshine. Here you can enjoy beach life to the full, e.g. swimming, relaxing or snorkelling. We also recommend a boat trip out to sea between February and April. With a bit of luck, you might see humpback whales.
Santa Maria Beach (Sal)
Praia Santa Maria is a very wide, relatively short beach with a gently sloping coastline. This section of beach is therefore ideal if you are on holiday with children. The shallow water is also ideal for those who want to learn to surf and kite.
Tarrafal Beach (Santiago)
On Santiago you will find Praia Tarrafal, a real picture-book beach. Tropical vegetation meets fine, white sand with azure blue water. The good thing about it: Praia Tarrafal not only provides a dream setting, but also offers the best conditions for bathing, swimming, snorkelling and surfing. Nearby, you can round off a wonderful day at the beach in one of the many local restaurants or bars.
Estoril Beach (Boa Vista)
The Praia do Estoril is a perfect beach for those who also want to explore the underwater world off Cape Verde. The snow-white sandy beach leads into the crystal-clear water, where you can snorkel or dive to your heart's content. Thanks to the more than ten kilometres of coastline, this beach is never really crowded, even in the high season. After sunset, Praia do Estoril comes alive with numerous clubs and bars to visit.
The best of both worlds: The cuisine of Cape Verde
Cape Verdean cuisine is a true explosion of flavours, combining African and Portuguese influences. It is characterised by its simplicity, heartiness and the use of fresh, local ingredients. Fish and seafood play a central role, as the islands are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Cachupa, a savoury stew made from corn, vegetables and often meat or fish, is the national dish. Caldo de peixe, a fish soup, and arroz de marisco, rice with seafood, are other popular dishes. Feijoada, a bean stew, and canja de galinha, a rice soup with chicken, round off the culinary offering. The cuisine of Cape Verde is a feast for all the senses and reflects the diverse culture of the archipelago.
The best time to travel to Cape Verde for a holiday
If you want to go on holiday to Cape Verde, you will benefit from constant climatic conditions all year round. Temperatures average between 22 and 29 degrees Celsius.
If you mainly want to swim and enjoy one of the many dream beaches, the dry season is the best time to visit. It begins in November and ends in June. If you want to surf on holiday, the season between July and October is perfect, as this is when the best wind conditions prevail.
The typical Cape Verdean carnival offers you a particularly deep insight into Cape Verdean culture. If you want to add this unique spectacle to your sunny beach holiday, it's best to travel to the country in February or March.
